The
Best
Defense
for Children
Chances are a child you care about will need to know when and how to say “NO!” to an adult they should be able to trust. ( Statistics show that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 10 boys are sexually exploited before they reach adulthood, yet less than 35% of those child sexual assaults are reported to authorities.)
Chances are a child you care about will need to know how to handle an Internet predator. (According to Highlights of the Youth Internet Safety Survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice “one in five children (10 to 17 years old) receive unwanted sexual solicitations online.” )
Chances are a child you care about will need to no how to escape from a dangerous person. (According to NISMART-2 research, which studied the year 1999, an estimated 797,500 children were reported missing; 58,200 children were abducted by non-family members; 115 children were the victims of the most serious, long-term non-family abductions.
Chances are a child you care about will need to know how to protect their self from a physical attack. (Forty-four percent of rape victims were younger than 18 years old, according to data from police-recorded incidents of rape in three states. Two-thirds of state incarcerated violent sex offenders said their victims were younger than 18. An estimated 15 percent of imprisoned rapists said their victims were 12 years old or younger. An estimated 45 percent of those sentenced to prison for other sexual assaults (statutory rape, forcible sodomy and molestation) said their victims were 12 years old or younger.)
Our programs have been offer through schools, park districts and community organizations since 2001. All instruction is designed to develop an awareness of danger, learn how to avoid danger and how to implement a course of action in the event of a physical assault.
“The Best Defense” program is designed to meet the criteria outlined in National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s Education Standards Task Force for choosing programs to teach personal safety to children.
